Ending the Tory neglect of the NHS is the top priority for Ed Davey, Lib Dem candidate for Kingston and Surbiton.
The NHS and social care system is in crisis, with Tory cuts and rising demand putting more and more pressure on our hardworking doctors, nurses and carers. Kingston Hospital’s finances are in the red and A&E queues are soaring - with the hospital missing its waiting targets this winter. And with one in five staff from other EU countries, many are fearful of their futures if a hard Brexit is imposed.
Formidable health campaigner
In his two decades as a campaigner and MP Ed Davey has built up a formidable reputation for campaigning for local health services.
I was proud to work with the local community to save Kingston Hospital A&E from closure and push through plans for Surbiton Health Centre. Now, I’m campaigning to secure the extra investment that our NHS so clearly needs and to stop a post Brexit ‘brain drain’ of health staff. Another Tory MP will simply back the cuts and make things worse.
I care deeply about the future of local health services, so I will fight every day to get the investment they so badly need.
But unlike the Tories, I won’t mislead you. So I want to make it clear that I would support a small tax increase if it was needed to fund health and social care.
I know it’s unusual for a politician to admit they could raise taxes in an election, but I want to honest with you - because the NHS is too important to leave to party politics.
What I can promise is that I will always be a champion for Kingston’s NHS.
